JUNE 12, 2026
Beginning July 31, 2026, Tennessee will implement changes to what items can be purchased using SNAP benefits through the state's new Healthy SNAP Tennessee initiative. These changes are designed to encourage healthier food choices while continuing to provide access to nutritious foods for families across the state.
At Friendly Budget Market, we want our customers to be informed and prepared before these changes take effect.
What Is Changing?
Starting July 31, 2026, certain processed foods and beverages that list sugar or high fructose corn syrup as a first ingredient will no longer be eligible for purchase using SNAP benefits in Tennessee. This includes many candy products, soft drinks, and other highly sweetened foods and beverages.
Many staple grocery items will continue to qualify, including:
Milk
Eggs
Bread
Cheese
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Meat and poultry
Rice and pasta
Canned fruits and vegetables
Peanut butter
Beans and other nutritious food items
The goal of the program is to help SNAP participants continue purchasing foods that support healthy lifestyles while maintaining access to essential groceries.
